What is Bulky Uterus? - Definition and Causes

Bulky uterus is a term loosely used to describe a condition in which the uterus is larger than normal or has increased in size.

There is no single cause of a bulky uterus, as it can develop due to a variety of factors, such as: 

1. Adenomyosis (when endometrial tissue grows inside uterus ¹),

2. Hormonal changes, recent pregnancy, benign or malignant tumors, pelvic congestion syndrome (a condition which is characterized by chronic pain as the blood flow of pelvic veins is reversed ²), and

3. Fibroids (non-malignant growth of muscles in uterus ³).^4,5

Women can also develop fibroids (and bulky uterus) during perimenopause.⁶ Perimenopause is transitional period in a woman's life during which she undergoes a range of physical, hormonal and emotional changes, eventually leading to menopause.⁷
